AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University Design on Main Gallery will host “Earth as Art,” an exhibition of satellite imagery from around the world, Feb. 2-26 in downtown Ames.
A fusion of art and science, the exhibition features stunningly beautiful images of the planet that also provide a platform to teach about satellite imagery and geography," said Amy Logan. Logan is a GIS analyst with the ISU Geographic Information Systems Support and Research Facility and program manager of IowaView, the Iowa chapter of the nationwide AmericaView consortium for remote sensing education, research, and geospatial applications.
Sponsored by the ISU GIS Facility and AmericaView, the traveling exhibition consists of more than 30 Landsat prints selected from the U.S. Geological Survey’s four “Earth as Art” collections along with several 4-foot-square canvases and four pull-up banners displaying the earth at night, Logan said.
The show will open with a public reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Design on Main Gallery, 203 Main St., Ames. A gallery talk by Brent Yantis, the “Earth as Art” curator, will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Gallery hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, 2 to 5 p.m. Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The show also will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26. Additional hours are available by appointment; contact Logan, amylogan@iastate.edu, to schedule an appointment.
Younger visitors can enjoy a scavenger hunt and educational posters in the gallery during opening hours. An exhibition connection guide focused on color and light also will be available in the gallery and online. Additional youth activities will be available by appointment. School groups, Boy Scout/Girl Scout troops, 4-H clubs, and other groups are invited to contact Logan for more information.
